UNC vs Stanford Betting Preview

North Carolina vs Stanford

The Camping World Maui Invitational from Asheville North Carolina will play its second round today as the North Carolina Tar Heels take on the Stanford Cardinal. The game tips at 4:00 PM and will be broadcast on ESPN.

North Carolina survived an early 13-0 deficit to UNLV on Monday evening to come back and win comfortably by 27. The first two games of the season have shown cause for concern when it comes to the Heels three-point shooting. Carolina is just 11-38 from behind the arc in their first two contests. The inexperienced roster has also had problems taking care of the ball, logging 25 turnovers against 23 assists. As expected, Coach Roy Williams’ team has been a terror on the glass, averaging over 50 rebounds in their first two contests.

Stanford dominated Alabama to close the first half in their season opener on Monday evening, eventually defeating the Crimson Tide 82-64. The Cardinal had five players in double digits led by five-star freshman Ziaire Williams with 19 points and 8 rebounds.

UNC Betting Preview: RJ stands for Real Joy

I said in the preseason to anyone that would listen that RJ Davis was going to be a treat this season and so far that has been correct. Davis may be small but he can score in a big way and was the key in bringing UNC back against UNLV on Monday.

While Caleb Love and Day’Ron Sharpe received most of the publicity, and rightfully so, Davis can provide that scoring on the wing that Carolina has been lacking since Cam Johnson graduated. Andrew Platek is helping out from deep as well but after last season there is some trepidation in completely trusting in his continued production.

Stanford Betting Preview: Straight A’s in their first contest

There were a lot of people that really liked Alabama coming into the season and Stanford just punched them in the mouth in the last ten minutes of the first half Monday. Too many people forget what a good player Oscar De Silva is for Jerod Haase and the Cardinal. As a junior, De Silva averaged north of 15 points and 6 rebounds per game.

Daejon Davis also looks like he may have taken a step forward for his junior season putting together a nice overall game in the opener with 13-4-4. The former Top 50 recruit will try to replace NBA draft pick Tyrell Terry this season.

My Pick

Since there is no line information available for this game (wtf are we doing here?) I will use the two most trustworthy metrics sites out there in Kenpom and Haslam.

I actually really want to take Stanford in this game on the moneyline. Garrison Brooks has put up ok numbers thus far but he has not looked like he did last year. That may have been a product of circumstance last season but he has not looked overly comfortable either. The other part of the Stanford love is that Carolina hasn’t shown the ability to shoot the ball as stated above. Until Caleb Love and either Leaky Black or Puff Johnson show they can be a threat, teams will just collapse on the big men.

Of course, the flip side to that coin is that Stanford committed 22 turnovers in their opening night contest against Alabama. The Crimson Tide are not known for their stout defensive ability. The Cardinal are well balanced which I like and do have some bodies to run up against this Carolina front line.

I am going to go with my gut here and say Stanford gets the win as Carolina has played with fire a little bit in their first two games. I do worry about Caleb Love harassing Davis but I think the Cardinal end up getting it done today.
