Line: Boston College (-1.5)

Moneyline: Boston College (-120), St. Johns (+105)

The Boston College Eagles will take on the St. Johns Redstorm on Monday night. The Redstorm enter the game with a 2-0 record on the young season with victories over Saint Peters (76-75) and La Salle (82-65).

The Eagles played Villanova tough on opening night before falling by nine. They followed that up with a victory of high scoring Fatts Russell and Rhode Island.

Boston College: Keeping Tabbs on the Eagles

The first week should have created some optimism in Chestnut Hill as Jim Christian’s squad gave top 5 ranked Villanova a heck of a fight on opening night. The return of Wynston Tabbs after 20 months and the eligibility of Makai Ashton-Langford seemed to be a shot in the arm for a team that many didn’t expect much from.

MAL, a transfer from Providence, was thought to be somewhat of a bust in his two seasons with the Friars but has played well in his two games with the Eagles. Likewise, Tabbs has looked like his old self in his first two games back from a knee injury, averaging 13.5 points and 5.5 rebounds.

Jay Heath, a talented sophomore guard who missed the URI game with a foot issue, will play Monday night according to Jim Christian. Heath scored 16 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 3 assists in the Villanova game. Expect Demarr Langford to head back to the bench.

St. Johns: More of a rain event than a storm

Noone expects much of Mike Anderson’s group this season after losing so much from last years group. The losses of LJ Figeroa (transfer) and Mustaha Herron took away a lot of scoring. To compound the situation, Julian Champagnie has been suffering through an ankle injury though he was a practice participant yesterday.

While the Johnnies struggled to put distance between themselves and Saint Peters, they did ultimately get the win as JUCO product Vince Cole and freshman Posh Alexander were able to do just enough. Hopefully Raheem Dunn can get back to last season’s form and give them another legit option as there will be growing pains. Dunn is currently out with a concussion.

The Pick

Boston College was 14-18 last season against the spread and just 44-48 ATS in Christians last three seasons. In Mike Anderson’s first season as the Redstorm coach, St. Johns went 18-12-2 ATS and typically outperformed the spread by 2.0 points per game with a margin of victory of 3.0.

I think Boston College has the superior talent but this is a very close call. When it comes down to it I like the back court of Heath, MAL and Tabbs more. Ryan Kelly has also provided the Eagles with some quality minutes thus far. Give me the Eagles to cover the line and I’ll also take the under.
