It was all an illusion. Remember just a few short weeks ago we were all wondering if Duke recruiting was dead? Well. It’s not.
Friday evening California point guard Rejean “Boogie” Ellis committed to Duke, per his twitter account.
The Blue Devils beat out Memphis, San Diego State and UNC among others. If you listen to the ACCBR podcast you would have heard me talk about this weeks ago. The Cole Anthony recruitment led to this commitment. Once Anthony eliminated Duke, Ellis became the object of their affection. Can you imagine missing on your first two targets (Josiah James, Anthony) and STILL landing a five star guy as your third option? Life is good in Durham.
Ellis is a combo guard out of San Diego who EXPLODED this passed summer on the AAU circuit where he worked his way up to five star status. I see him as a super athletic point guard, but if Tre Jones were to come back for his sophomore season Ellis is definitely capable of playing the deuce.
Duke continues to wreak havoc in the recruiting world. Their ability to be “johnny come lately” and still land guys is absolutely unreal. The Devils offered Ellis on 9/18, had him on campus on 10/26 and had him committed by 11/9. That’s efficiency brother.
Ellis joins Wendell Moore in Duke’s 2019 recruiting class. They are both five star kids and will no doubt be working on Vernon Carey Jr. to join them.
